ICOR is not your run-of-the mill fitness boxing gym. ICOR Boxing is Iowa City's longest operating USA Boxing registered amateur boxing club. We are fully accredited and insured. Since ICOR's inception, our competition team members have won well over 30 state, regional, national, and international championships. We have also helped hundreds of people learn the Sweet Science and other disciplines, while getting in shape and gaining confidence.
Even though the vast majority of our members do not compete, we teach boxing and other disciplines as if we were preparing you to fight in the ring. Classes are highly focused on teaching proper technique. Unlike other fitness boxing gyms, you will learn precise offense, defense, and footwork all while getting a great workout. We will not just yell at you while you flail your arms and legs at the bags in a desperate attempt to "burn calories" while risking injury due to inadequate technique. We are not that gym.
What can you expect at ICOR? Expect to be challenged. Expect to be pushed. Expect to learn how to actually box and even fight, if that is your desire. If you don't want to spar, that is okay too. We do not force anyone to do anything they're not comfortable with. We also won't just throw you in the deep end and expect you to swim on your first day. If you would like to try sparring, first we'll put you in there with a more experienced partner who is 100% on the defense. That will give you the opportunity to hit a human moving target, which is much more difficult than hitting the heavy bag. After you get comfortable with that, we'll slowly start to increase the challenge in a controlled manner. You could do body-only sparring, or you spar with the jab only, for instance. It is natural to be nervous about sparring, however, we have found that many of our members who started with no intention to ever get in the ring now enjoy the challenge of sparring. You will never know what you are capable of if you don't try!
